AMERICORPS LEGAL FELLOW, CLASS OF 2008

Name of Host Organization: LawNY
City, State: Rochester, New York
THE INSPIRATION
Our project helps to bridge the justice gap by exposing law students to public interest work using a two-fold process. First, law students are exposed to public interest work and will hopefully pursue it in the future. Second, due to the help of the law students, more clients can be reached and provided legal services.
THE PROJECT
I co-administer the Law Students in Action Project (LSAP) with Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Attorneys Bethany Hamilton and Tahira Bland. LSAP is hosted by Legal Assistance of Western New York Inc. (LAWNY), an LSC-funded legal services provider with seven offices throughout western and central New York. I am continuing the LSAP tradition of expanding volunteer and pro bono opportunities for law students and private attorneys within LAWNY’s service area and helping to bridge the justice gap.
BIOGRAPHY
Hometown: | Rochester, New York |
Law school: | |
Surviving law school: | Throughout law school I tried to fill my summers by pursuing some sort of public interest work. I interned at the New York State Division of Human Rights, doing intake and working on client cases regarding discrimination. I also spent another summer as a law clerk at the Ontario County Attorney's office. |
Recommended books: | I do not really have any favorite books. Most recently I have been reading "Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury," which is a compilation of the greatest closing arguments in modern law. The book is quite inspiring, and helps me to try to focus my orative skills and become a better speaker, and hopefully a better attorney (once I pass the bar!). |
Words to live by: | "Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The trouble-makers. The round heads in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status-quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify, or vilify them. But the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do." - Jack Kerouac |
