AMERICORPS LEGAL FELLOW, CLASS OF 2009
Julia Martin
Name of Host Organization: Advocates for Basic Legal Equality
City, State: Dayton, Ohio
THE INSPIRATION
When I read the fellowship announcement, I was simply excited. It seemed like the exact position I imagined I would want when I first decided on law school. I love the idea of being able to help people that would otherwise not be able to receive assistance.
THE PROJECT
To help create and facilitate pro bono opportunities for law students and lawyers in order to provide essential legal services in underrepresented communities. Learn more about my project on YouTube.
BIOGRAPHY
Hometown: | Dayton, Ohio |
Law school: | |
Making the connection: | While studying in undergrad I became aware of the problem of low-income areas of housing being subjected to hazardous waste disposal basically in their back yards. Big companies looked the other way, the heads of local governments looked the other way. Their only help came from public interest groups, many of whom were lawyers, willing to speak out for them when no one else would. |
Surviving law school: | Law school was tough, between work, school and family obligations, it was easy to get bogged down. But I always tried to remember those times where someone felt so happy or so much peace of mind because I had helped them solve a legal issue. It's those small victories that got me through. |
Music I love: | Rock - everything Journey, don't stop believing! Pop, Hip Hop, R&B - I can't pick just one, but I love to dance. Classical - Chopin's Raindrop Prelude - Pachelbel's Canon in D I was raised on classical music, it will always make the playlists. |
Words to live by: | “Remember who you wanted to be.” |
