Frequently Asked Questions about the Conference and Career Fair
Q: What happens at the Equal Justice Works Conference and Career Fair?
A: The 2008 Conference and Career Fair is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. Included with the Conference and Career Fair is an Awards Luncheon that honors a law school dean, a faculty/staff member and a student. Equal Justice Works provides several conference sessions over two days for law students, graduates and law school professionals. More than 150 employers interview for public interest internships, staff positions and volunteer opportunities.
Q: What is the difference between the Awards Dinner and the Awards Luncheon?
A: The Awards Dinner is a fundraiser put on by Equal Justice Works to help support our programs. The Awards Luncheon is especially for law schools to celebrate achievements of peers and mentors. The luncheon will honor an outstanding dean, law school professional and student.
Q: What Conference sessions are available to students and graduates?
A: The 2007 Conference featured 14 exciting sessions divided into three tracks:
- Timely topics and activism: Workshops address timely, substantive law areas by providing an issue overview as well as current and new legal, political or economic developments. Additionally, the workshops offer advice on how to become involved.
- Leadership: Workshops provide skills training in leadership areas that are necessary for campus student leaders and new lawyers.
- Roadmap to a Public Interest Career: Workshops focus on opportunities outside of the classroom that 1L, 2L or 3L students should be involved in to prepare for a career in public interest law.
The sessions feature students, organizations and legal professionals dedicated to public interest. See Conference Sessions for more information.
Q: How do students and law school professionals register for the event?
A: Students, graduates and law school professionals pre-register for the Conference and Career Fair at the Equal Justice Works website. Registration is usually available by mid-August. Once pre-registered, students must be approved by their career services or public interest office.
Q: Will students and law school professionals be allowed to register after the deadline?
A: On-site registration will be available to participants who decide to attend the event after the registration deadline passes. If necessary, schools will be invoiced for the additional registrations following the event.
Q: Does Equal Justice Works make travel arrangements and/or pay for attending the Conference and Career Fair?
A: Students, graduates and staff registered for any part of the Conference and Career Fair are responsible for their own travel arrangements. For travel and lodging information, as well as directions to the event, visit Travel, Lodging and Venue Information.
NOTE: Travel Assistance Grants are available for students who attend Equal Justice Works member schools. To receive travel assistance, students must submit the official Travel Assistance Reimbursement Form and original receipts to their career services or pro bono office. The administrator for the school's Equal Justice Works membership must verify and sign-off on the expenses and mail all materials to Equal Justice Works. All eligible schools will have 60 days to use its travel grant money after the event.
If you have any additional questions, please contact membership.
Additional FAQs for Students and Graduates
Q: What is the process for submitting résumés and scheduling interviews for the Career Fair?
A: Students apply for interviews prior to the Career Fair by submitting résumés and cover letters directly to participating employers. Employers review materials and contact the students with whom they wish to interview. To learn more about the employers who are participating in the Career Fair, view our Employer List.
NOTE: In accordance with the National Association for Law Placement guidelines, first-year students are not permitted to participate in one-on-one employer interviews. However, they may participate in Table Talk and conference sessions.
Q: What is the deadline for students and graduates to submit résumés to employers?
A: Employers may still accept résumés after this date at their discretion. Students and graduates are encouraged to review the employer database often and submit résumés as soon as possible.
Q: When will students and graduates be notified by employers?
A: Employers have been asked to notify students and graduates of their interview status as soon as possible. Students and graduates may follow up with employers using the contact information in the Employer Database.
Q: What is Table Talk?
A: Table Talk allows students and graduates to meet informally with employers. During Table Talk sessions scheduled each afternoon, students can stop by employer tables to discuss summer and post-graduate opportunities and drop off résumés.
Q: Which employers are participating in Table Talk?
A: Every employer at the Career Fair participates in Table Talk. This is a great opportunity for students to meet with the employers in which they are particularly interested.
Q: Are students allowed to speak with employers outside of Table Talk if they don’t have an interview scheduled?
A: Employers will have signs at their tables indicating that they are either in an interview or available to speak with students. Students should approach an employer ONLY if the employer is NOT conducting an interview.
