Summer Corps Members Protect the Powerless
At the New Haven Legal Assistance Association, Inc., Summer Corps Member Nora Grais-Clements utilized her bilingual skills to help Hispanic vulnerable populations.
Using her ability to speak Spanish, Nora was able to communicate with a domestic violence victim. Nora helped her locate and retrieve her children by preparing an application for a restraining order within 48 hours of their first meeting. Later in the week, Nora accompanied the parties to Family Relations, where the children’s father agreed to the restraining order and a limited visitation schedule, in addition to granting the mother full legal and physical custody of their children.
With your skills and dedication, Equal Justice Works Summer Corps can help more vulnerable communities around the nation like Nora did in Connecticut. Apply to be a 2011 Summer Corps member today and join Nora in eliminating barriers to legal representation. The Summer Corps application period closes on April 10, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. EDT.
Do not miss out on the chance to receive an AmeriCorps educational award that can go towards your student loan debt or educational expenses!
