The Inspiration

The Project

Laura F. Redman works on the Access to Medicaid Project at the National Center for Law and Economic Justice. Laura's project aims to develop the center as a clearinghouse that: educates people on the most effective means of ensuring access to Medicaid; ensures that advocacy work is not duplicated; offers strategic assistance to local groups; and evaluates how the center can lend its experience and expertise to nationwide class action litigation. At present, many states are scaling back their Medicaid and state-funded programs and Congress is considering drastic changes in its funding measures. History shows that when such changes are made, Medicaid enrollment plummets, even among those that remain eligible and a coordinated multi-pronged approach can preserve health care coverage for the poor.

The National Center for Law and Economic Justice is a national organization committed to assuring that low-income individuals and families have a decent standard of living. The center works towards this goal through the use of impact litigation, policy advocacy and support for grassroots organizing. Laura's project helps the center build on its successes at a time of ever-increasing need and expand its network through collaboration with other advocacy groups that assist the diverse communities affected by Medicaid changes.

Laura became involved in legal advocacy for underrepresented communities between college and law school and has continued to build on this dedication to public interest law through to her most recent position as a lawyer at the Commission for Racial Equality in London, England. Upon graduation from Northeastern, Laura served for two years as a judicial law clerk in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit Staff Attorneys' Office in New York, where she was exposed to access to justice issues in the federal appellate system. During law school, Laura worked with Equal Rights Advocates in San Francisco, the National Council for Civil Liberties in London and the Fair Housing Center in Boston. Laura also holds a master's degree in gender studies and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Albert Kennedy Trust, an organization that provides services for homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) young people in the United Kingdom.
