Name of Host Organization: Advocates for Children
City, State: New York, New York
Issue area: Education/Special Education
Sponsors: Greenberg Traurig. LLP

The Project

Provide direct legal representation, outreach and training, and policy advocacy to address bullying of students in NYC schools, with a special focus on LGBTQ students and students with disabilities.

The Inspiration

Need Addressed By Project
A disproportionate number of LGBTQ students and students with disabilities are the targets of bullying. Students with disabilities are two to three times more likely to be bullied than their peers. Students who are bullied are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, lower academic achievement, and truancy, and to drop out of school. Students who are LGBTQ or have disabilities have disproportionately high rates of school suspension.
The Right Person For This Project
Gena is the right person for the project because:
• She is committed to helping students and families advocate for education justice
• While teaching in the New York City Department of Education, she worked with students whose education was disrupted by bullying incidents
• Her legal experiences in direct services, policy work, and impact litigation give her the tools to be an effective advocate
