The Project

Provide legal services to low-income New York City communities developing affordable, reliable and clean energy projects that create local economic development and relieve utility burdens.

The Inspiration

Need Addressed By Project:
Lack of access to affordable, clean energy poses a significant challenge for New York City’s low-income communities. With electricity rates 59% higher in New York than the national average and a record number of power termination notices issued in 2014, low-income families face a crushing utility burden. In addition, these same communities shoulder the lion’s share of the negative health impacts of aging, conventional energy infrastructure.
The Right Person For This Project:
Shiva is the right person for the project because:
• She worked for several years implementing community-based energy efficiency and renewable energy generation in low-income housing and communities
• She has a background in urban planning and has engaged in many community economic development efforts related to housing, energy and local business development
• She has provided transactional legal services to low-income business owners and community groups as part of a clinic
