The Project

Reduce the school-to-prison pipeline for students of color with mental health needs in New York City through direct representation, community legal education, parent engagement, and policy advocacy.

The Inspiration

Need Addressed By Project
Recent years have seen an increasing focus on the school-to-prison pipeline (STPP). The intersection of student mental health and school discipline, however, has yet to play a prominent role in this policy discussion. In New York City (NYC) alone, almost 270,000 school-aged children have a diagnosable mental illness or disability; thousands more have undiagnosed needs.
The Right Person For This Project
Katherine is the right person for the project because:
• She brings extensive policy experience from her years working at New York Lawyers for the Public Interest where, in coalition with community organizations, she successfully lead campaigns to increase the rights of millions of New Yorkers, including women of color with disabilities, immigrants, students, and low income communities
