The Project

Provide on-site critical and comprehensive legal services to victims of domestic violence in Alameda County's Highland Hospital through a medical-legal partnership.

The Inspiration

Need Addressed By Project:
Alameda County, harbors 200,000 people living in poverty, and Highland is their safety net hospital. Nearly 90,000 patients circulate through Highland’s Emergency Department each year, and one-third of its female trauma patients present for DV-related injuries. Providers in the hospital’s non-emergency clinics report a high prevalence of DV as well. While Highland’s staff members often refer these patients out to legal non-profits, very few victims actually receive legal services.
The Right Person For This Project:
Brittany is the right person for the project because:
• She has lived the East Bay where Highland is located for over a decade and has worked in local and national efforts to combat DV since 2009.
• She has served DV victims in various legal internships through trial, appellate and administrative advocacy.
• Her direct legal service experiences with low-income clients include immigration, family law, elder abuse, and housing.
