The Inspiration

Need Addressed By Project
As the country’s most diverse metropolitan area, Houston has a large population of immigrants and refugees. Lone Star Legal Aid needs additional support in reaching out to immigrants and refugees who are likely unfamiliar with the U.S. tax system. Despite a person’s undocumented status, immigrants still have an obligation to report income to the IRS. The lack of knowledge of the tax system makes this population vulnerable to tax preparer and immigration fraud.
The Right Person For This Project
Lisa is the right person for the project because:
• During law school, Lisa has gained experience working in consumer, tax, and immigration law at various organizations, including Tahirih Justice Center, the Anti-Defamation League, Lone Star Legal Aid, and the University of Houston Law Center’s Transactional Law Clinic and Civil Clinic
• As the daughter of an immigrant, Lisa is passionate about working with immigrant communities and understands the struggles of adjusting to a new country
