2017, Equal Justice Works Fellowships, Jennifer Goodwin

Jennifer Goodwin

Name of Host Organization: Legal Aid of Arkansas
City, State: Little Rock, Arkansas
Issue area: Health Care/Medical-Legal Partnership
Sponsors: Walmart, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP

The Project

Provide legal advocacy and outreach to physically disabled children and their families at Arkansas Children's Hospital Neuroscience Center through Medical-Legal Partnership.

The Inspiration

Need Addressed By Project
ACH is the only children’s hospital in the state and it treats over 10,000 children from all areas of AR each year. Many of these children are facing devastating, life-changing illnesses or injuries. The results of a study from ACH showed that at least half of all patients also had a legal need that affected his or her health. AR has a vast area that is rural and severely lacks legal representation.
The Right Person For This Project

Jen is the right person for the project because:
• She has a passion for bettering the lives of people with disabilities
• She has experience working through many of the processes necessary to receive the available assistance needed
• She has faced her own life-changing injury and understands the impact it can have on the entire family

Plans For First Six Months of Fellowship

In the first six months, Jen will:
• Attend patient team meetings to determine common needs more thoroughly
• Conduct an initial assessment to determine how key patient needs intersect with organizational goals
• Create patient screening protocols
