Gelila Selassie

2017, Equal Justice Works Fellowships, Gelila Selassie

Gelila Selassie

Name of Host Organization: Legal Services of Southern Piedmont
City, State: Charlotte, North Carolina
Issue area: Elderly
Sponsors: Pfizer, Inc.

The Project

Gelila will promote elder care and prevent elder abuse for low income seniors by increasing access to healthcare and legal services.

The Inspiration

Need Addressed By Project
Elderly immigrants face additional barriers to services due to limited English proficiency and general confusion regarding domestic healthcare programs. As a result, seniors are unable to access crucial services which could greatly improve their health and well-being. The absence of these services makes poor seniors highly susceptible to exploitation and abuse.
The Right Person For This Project
Gelila is the right person for the project because:
• She has provided legal advocacy to senior citizens through her law school’s elder law clinic
• She has extensive experience counseling low-income elderly and immigrant clients
• She developed strong relationships with local health clinics and nonprofits while working as a health insurance navigator
Plans For First Six Months of Fellowship
In the first six months, Gelila will:
• Conduct assessment of elder care needs not addressed by community partners
• Develop intake procedures and materials for individual cases
• Create elder care and abuse prevention materials for hospitals and clinics
• Initiate interagency collaborative with local nonprofits and government agencies focused on combating elder abuse
