Laura Wright

Name of Host Organization: The Southern Coalition for Social Justice
City, State: Durham, North Carolina
Issue area: Voting Rights/Electoral Participation
Sponsors: The Selbin Family

The Project

Develop and spread best practices for combating discriminatory administrative barriers to voting to minority communities throughout the south.

The Inspiration

Need Addressed By Project
Voter suppression efforts via administrative changes to voting are becoming more prevalent, particularly in communities of color throughout the south. Such barriers include the purging of voter rolls, the changing and closing of polling locations, and a series of harsh burdens on (including criminalization of) voter registration assistance. This project will provide affected communities with the resources they need to advocate for themselves.
The Right Person For This Project

Laura is the right person for the project because:
• She has a demonstrated commitment to voting rights
• Her coalition building experience
• She has worked on both programmatic and litigation efforts to protect voting rights

Plans For First Six Months of Fellowship

In the first six months, Laura will:
• Identify and survey community partners about voting issues in their communities and suggestions for addressing those issues
• Research the facts of those issues and their potential legal implications
• Catalogue common problems
• Triage the issues and analyze which communities to target in early 2018.
