The Project

Reunite refugee and asylee families in the Tri-State area with overseas family members through direct targeted outreach, community education, and legal representation.

The Inspiration

Need Addressed By Project
This project was established to address the growing need of U.S. volunteer agencies that assist refugees and asylees (“VOLAGS”) in the Tri-State area who have reported that they have hundreds of eligible clients in need of family reunification assistance. These family-based applications are critical legal avenues allowing persecuted people to continue to get to safety in the U.S. and join their families.
The Right Person For This Project

Amira is the right person for the project because:

  • She has previous experience representing refugee clients in family reunification cases, having interned with the International Refugee Assistance Project during law school and subsequently continued as a pro bono advocate for IRAP for three years.
  • She has extensive experience researching and writing on human rights conditions in the Middle East including country conditions for refugee and asylee cases.
  • She has incorporated and founded a nonprofit during law school, providing her with crucial program management experience and the initiative necessary to develop and execute a successful and sustainable project.
Plans For First Six Months of Fellowship

In the first six months, Amira will:

  • Conduct outreach and develop partnerships with local VOLAGs in the Tri-State area to establish screening clinics to educate and identify prospective clients.
  • Develop a training, a written manual, and a screening form to educate and guide pro bono attorneys and paralegals on how to effectively screen and represent refugee and asylee family reunification cases in order to staff screening clinics and create a network of attorneys to provide full representation.
  • Identify and begin direct representation of clients.
