VISTA Affordable Housing Preservation Project

About the VISTA Affordable Housing Preservation Project (VAHPP)

Funded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the goal of the VISTA Affordable Housing Preservation Project (VAHPP) is to preserve, maintain, and improve Section 8 affordable housing across the United States. The project’s sole grantee, Equal Justice Works manages 45 VISTA Members in the provision of capacity building services for HUD residents through legal support and community organizing. Originally conceived as a two-year program, early results prompted HUD and CNCS to extend the program’s timeline and allocate additional funds for legal Fellows focused on housing rights.

About the Fellowship

VAHPP offers a great national service opportunity for individuals interested in community lawyering, housing rights, and community development. Qualified candidates are paired with a host site which provides direct supervision for the member throughout their one-year term of service. VISTA members are also administered training and provided with technical assistance by Equal Justice Works and the National Alliance of HUD Tenants (NAHT) throughout their Fellowships.

Living Allowances and Benefits

AmeriCorps VISTA Legal Fellows and Community Organizers are volunteers who are provided a modest living allowance and benefits which ranges from approximately $12,000 to $20,000 depending on the region where the host site is based. Members will be eligible to receive additional compensation from their host sites to assist in housing, student loan, transportation, and other living costs. VAHPP Members are also eligible for federal student loan forbearance, student loan assistance, and a $5,775 education award at the end of their year of service. Equal Justice Works will cover travel and training expenses for VAHPP Members to attend national conferences and trainings.
