EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS SUPPORTS SERVICENATION; ENDORSES “STRATEGIES FOR BECOMING A NATION OF SERVICE” | |
|
WASHINGTON,
D.C. -
Equal Justice Works has joined the American Red Cross, Teach for America, United Way and many other organizations in support of ServiceNation, a national campaign to promote public service, volunteerism and community involvement. Through this coalition of organizations, ServiceNation reaches millions of American citizens and will promote public service and civic engagement among our nation’s leadership. The ultimate vision of ServiceNation is an America in which, by 2020, 100 million Americans will volunteer time in schools, workplaces, and faith-based and community institutions each and every year (up from 61 million today), and that increasing numbers of Americans annually will commit a year of their lives to national service. “The parallels between our organization and this campaign are great – we look forward to working with the coalition to implement the strategies for becoming a nation of service,” said Cole McMahon, Senior Program Manager for AmeriCorps at Equal Justice Works. Mr. McMahon will be representing Equal Justice Works at the ServiceNation Summit in support of the campaign. The campaign launches on September 11, 2008, in New York City with the ServiceNation Summit. At the summit, presidential candidates Senators John McCain and Barack Obama will deliver their views on the role of citizenship and service in post-9/11 America. About ServiceNation: The goal of ServiceNation (www.servicenation.org) is to mobilize a grassroots movement that will inspire America’s leaders to expand voluntary community and national service opportunities, target America’s greatest societal challenges with proven service strategies, and promote voluntary service as a core ideal in our democracy. A full list of ServiceNation coalition members can be found here. Equal Justice Works, a nonprofit, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 1986 by law students dedicated to working for equal justice on behalf of underserved communities and causes. Today, Equal Justice Works is the national leader in creating summer and postgraduate public interest opportunities for law students and lawyers as well as in urging more public interest programming at law schools.
