EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS APPOINTS NEW DEPUTY DIRECTOR

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Equal Justice Works announces the appointment of Susan K. Gurley as Deputy Director. Ms. Gurley will manage the day-to-day internal operations of the organization, as well as provide support to its programs, development and marketing and communications departments.

Ms. Gurley comes to Equal Justice Works with more than 10 years of senior management, operations and program development experience. Most recently she worked as the Senior Alliance Advisor for USAID where she developed strategies to improve the organization’s ability to leverage the expertise of the private sector, nonprofit organizations, and foundations to meet the U.S. Government’s international development needs.

Prior to work at USAID, Ms. Gurley was the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE). During her tenure she expanded programming to Latin America and the Middle East, initiated several corporate social responsibility initiatives, including education programs around anti-trafficking of women and children and green travel, and convened the travel industry's first carbon-low conference.

From 2001 to 2005, she served as the Assistant Dean of International and Graduate Programs for Georgetown University’s Law Center, administering the school’s LL.M program with more than 500 students and a $30 million annual budget. She also created the International Human Rights and National Security Law Certificate programs and the LL.M’s spring externship program to allow students to intern with nonprofit and international organizations and foundations. Ms. Gurley was also an adjunct faculty member.

Ms. Gurley has also worked in the field of international development, and provided legal and commercial law reform assistance to Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and the Newly Independent States, and Cambodia.

Ms. Gurley received a B.A. in Political Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Phi Beta Kappa, and her J.D. from the University of Virginia Law School. She is a member of the Virginia Bar Association and in 1997 was awarded the United States Agency for International Development Meritorious Award.

“Susan has a strong combination of operations and program management experience and her law school administration experience will be beneficial in interacting with our Fellows and law school members,” said David Stern, Executive Director of Equal Justice Works. “Our programs continue to grow and we anticipate introducing several new initiatives in the next year. We are very excited to have someone with Susan’s diverse skill set joining our management team to help guide our growth.”
