The purpose of the Pro Bono Legal Assistance Project is to increase opportunities for law students to participate in pro bono activities while also increasing support and assistance for volunteer attorneys in LAWO's 32 county service area. The Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellow will cultivate relations with law school students and faculty, work with legal aid staff, volunteer lawyers, government leaders, court personnel, judges, and bar leaders in an effort to raise awareness and visibility of pro bono work while expanding opportunities for participation. The AmeriCorps Fellow will work with law schools to recruit and train students; work with legal aid staff on special rural pro bono and low income taxpayer projects; provide referrals and support to volunteer lawyers; develop community education and pro se materials; and provide direct legal assistance to low income clients.
