The Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago (LAF), a not-for-profit corporation with approximately 90 attorneys, is the principal provider of free civil legal services to low-income and elderly persons in Chicago and Suburban Cook County. Services are provided from six general service offices and a variety of special projects such as the Home Ownership Preservation Project (HOPP).
HOPP represents homeowners facing the loss of their homes, either defendants in mortgage foreclosure cases or debtors in bankruptcy. HOPP also files affirmative claims against predatory brokers and lenders and files quiet title actions challenging foreclosure rescue fraud. Many of HOPP’s cases involve homeowners who have been victimized by predatory lending; as a result, HOPP is also involved at the policy level seeking better consumer protection laws.
