LEGAL ASSISTANCE OF WESTERN NEW YORK

Three Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellows — one in Geneva, one in Ithaca and one in Rochester — will continue the development and implementation of an initiative which will engage law student volunteers in the delivery of direct services at legal services and other public interest law offices in the City of Rochester, its suburbs and more than 13 rural counties in central and western New York. The AmeriCorps Legal Fellows will work with law school personnel and public interest law firms to develop placements for volunteer law students. Additionally, the AmeriCorps Attorneys will recruit, train and oversee those students. Current projects for law students include a summer associate program which offers full-time placements at public interest law firms, a volunteer research assistance team, a Spanish translation and interpretation assistance team, pro se divorce clinics, a prisoner reentry clinic, and placement opportunities with private attorneys engaged in pro bono work.
The Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow in New York City will work with the New York LawHelp Consortium, of which LAWNY is a staffing partner. The Consortium manages www.LawHelp.org/NY, New York’s client based legal services website. The Fellow will work under the direction of the LawHelp Project Director, at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. The Fellow will assist with the launch of LiveHelp, a web project that provides real time “chat” style navigation support to users needing help finding appropriate legal resources.
