American Recovery and Reinvestment Act
Responding to the economic Crisis
For almost 25 years, Equal Justice Works has collaborated with the nation’s leading law schools, law firms, corporate legal departments and nonprofit organizations to mobilize the next generation of lawyers committed to equal justice. As the nation’s largest provider of public interest opportunities for law students and lawyers, we are doing everything in our power to respond to the economic crisis.
This past May, the Corporation for National & Community Service announced that Equal Justice Works would receive a $1.2 million Recovery Act grant to support an additional 30 AmeriCorps Legal Fellows and 305 Summer Corps law students to expand legal services to victims of the economic crisis, such as those affected by mortgage foreclosures, natural disasters and other critical need areas.
Equal Justice Works manages one of the most successful and highly regarded AmeriCorps programs in the nation. Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Fellows have recruited over 10,000 volunteer lawyers and law students and served over 150,000 clients. In 2008 alone, Summer Corps members directly assisted 18,395 individuals and families in need of legal service and performed a total of 120,434 service hours.

In 2009-2010, we will have 66 attorneys in the field nationally. 30 of these attorneys are funded through the Recovery Act. Supported by an AmeriCorps grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service, the program is a postgraduate opportunity to address gaps in legal services through pro bono management and direct legal services. This summer, nearly 600 law students are focusing their service bridging the justice gap. This service is possible through the Equal Justice Works Summer Corps program, an AmeriCorps-funded initiative that provides law students with a $1,000 education award for dedicating their summer to a legal project at a nonprofit public interest organization.
