ANNOUNCEMENTS
Summer Corps and National Service
Summer Corps members are part of AmeriCorps, a national service program that allows 100,000 people each year to serve their communities. AmeriCorps meets critical needs in education, public safety, health and the environment. As the only law student AmeriCorps program, Summer Corps members have a unique responsibility to serve.
AmeriCorps members across the country tutor children, build houses, respond to disasters, generate volunteers and make a difference in their communities in many ways. Summer Corps members serve their communities by helping those who need a voice - families facing foreclosure and eviction, immigrants, indigent criminal defendants , and communities still recovering from Katrina, just to name a few.
In 2009, Equal Justice Works Summer Corps members provided crucial legal assistance to communities across the country. Nearly 400 members in 42 states gave their time and talents in exchange for a modest educational award, serving 19,550 clients. Many discovered that the true rewards are in public service work experience and in making lasting differences in the lives of others.
Make a difference
“I will never forget my clients, their stories of defeat, triumph, pain, strength, frustration, and hope. I will be forever humbled and motivated by their stories, their trust in me, and their perseverance. I worked hard to provide them with culturally-competent, empathetic, and empowering representation and hope to continue to work to reform the legal system to provide more meaningful access to justice.”
