The Path to Public Interest: Working in Higher Paying Jobs through Law School
Although this option may seem like a sellout to those who are passionately committed to working for the public interest, it is necessary to be realistic. Working at a private firm during the summer could help you save money for when you get out of school and commit yourself to public service. It could also help you reduce your debt due to fewer student loans, which will leave you with more gross pay in your pocket once you start you career. However, it is also important to remember to continue to do your public interest work at this time through involvement in student organizations, writing on a journal, or doing pro bono work to gain public service experience. Opportunities may also be available to split summer work between a firm and a public interest organization. Some of the firms sponsoring public interest summers include Arnold & Porter; Bradley Arant Rose & White LLP; Crowell & Moring; Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP; King & Spalding; Morgan, Lewis & Bockius; Shipman & Goodwin; and Simpson Thacher.
