The Path to Public Interest: Public Interest Law Opportunities
Throughout the school year, you should be on the lookout for public interest internships as well as any pro bono opportunities that may come up. Another great resource to use for relevant information is PSLawNet. Toward the end of your school-year experience, it is also a good idea to think about applying for public interest post-graduate fellowships.
Equal Justice Works provides fellowship opportunities through its Fellowships Program, available to second, third and graduate law students. This Fellowship provides funding for nonprofit organizations and individual attorneys to create and implement a two-year fellowship project involving legal advocacy on behalf of low-income or other underrepresented community or issue. The fellowship addresses a range of issues that includes civil rights, CED, death penalty, disability rights, domestic violence, housing, environmental justice, immigration, welfare reform and workers rights. Although fellowships are available, they require a lot of planning and a lengthy application process, which you can learn about by contacting your law school support system.
