Veterans Legal Corps

Veterans often face complex and intertwined legal problems, many of which stem from physical and mental injuries sustained during military service.

When these legal problems go unresolved, they can multiply over time, creating insurmountable barriers to successful civilian life.

The Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Veterans Legal Corps (VLC) provides legal services that enable low-income and homeless veterans and their families to stabilize, recover, and rebuild their lives. VLC Fellows are hosted at legal services organizations across the country where they work to:

  • Provide legal representation and assistance to veterans and their families on issues related to housing, employment, consumer and medical debt, government benefits, child support, and other family law matters
  • Build relationships with community partners, including staff at the VA hospitals, clinics, and veterans centers, as well as work with law schools
  • Deliver presentations on veterans’ rights and benefits, and create educational tools and resources that can be shared across their host organization and with community partners

VLC is an AmeriCorps National program funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service. VLC Fellows receive an annual living allowance, as well as financial support for housing, student loan repayment, other permissible reimbursable living expenses, health insurance and other benefits. Additionally, Fellows are entitled to a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of the program.
