The Project

Through a medical-legal partnership established by the University of Miami Health Rights Clinic, I will be working alongside a team of lawyers, doctors, law students, and medical students to help ensure that low-income and homeless veterans in the Miami Area are receiving the public benefits to which they are entitled. Doctors and social workers within the Miami VA Healthcare System refer clients to the clinic for assistance with Veterans’ Benefits, Social Security, Disability, and other public assistance claims. We will also be providing permanency planning services for Veterans and their families, including wills, living wills, durable powers of attorney, and advanced directives.

The Inspiration

Why is this Project Important

Growing up, I traveled to Maine every summer to visit family. At the Bangor airport, our nation’s main arrival point and departure point for American military members serving around the world, I would almost always see soldiers leaving for or returning from deployment. I was always struck by their bravery and inspired by their service, but until I started law school I hadn’t found a way to utilize my skills and interests to serve my country. I spent my first summer in law school interning for the Army JAG Corps and my second summer interning for a Coast Guard legal office, and I am proud to be able to continue to serve as an EJW AmeriCorps Legal Fellow.
