The Project

Anne advocated for refugee children in jurisdictions with high asylum denial rates, such as Atlanta and Charlotte, through direct representation, trauma-informed pro bono training and national policy work.

Anne’s project responds to the increasing numbers of children and families seeking asylum in the United States. Though many seek asylum based on similar forms of persecution, their reception has not been uniform. Certain immigration courts, such as Atlanta and Charlotte, deny claims at rates that are significantly above the national average. These geographic challenges are augmented by recent developments in asylum law that seek to restrict access to asylum for people fleeing gangs or domestic violence.

Fellowship Highlights

As a Fellow, Anne has participated in several impact litigation efforts, focusing on challenges to Matter of A-B-, a decision issued by the Attorney General intended to curtail asylum for those fleeing gang or domestic violence. These cases include Grace v. Whitaker, a successful challenge to A-B- and related policies wherein the D.C. District Court struck down several aspects of the decision as unlawful, as well as the ongoing representation of Ms. A.B. herself. Anne also represented individual asylum seekers at the immigration court level and before the circuit courts of appeal.

What’s Next

After her Fellowship, Anne will clerk for the Honorable Gerard E. Lynch on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She plans to return to immigration work at the conclusion of her clerkship.
