The Project

justice AmeriCorps — a collaboration between the Department of Justice and AmeriCorps to provide representation to immigrant children under the age of 16 entering the country alone who are in deportation proceedings, and to increase the efficiency of the immigration court system.

The Inspiration

Need Addressed By Project

Thousands of children are coming to the United States and put into deportation proceedings without any knowledge about this country’s immigration laws and procedures. North Carolina has received over 1,000 of these children, 78% of whom, until this project was created, were appearing in immigration court without a lawyer, and most of whom were ultimately receiving orders of deportation.
