The Project

Bibi Barnes is a housing staff attorney for Mid-Shore Pro Bono, Inc., where she provides legal services to tenants in eviction proceedings in Somerset, Wicomico, and Dorchester County. Bibi’s Fellowship seeks to address the lack of counsel issue that tenants face in eviction proceedings, as well as other issues, such as improper filing and notice issues on behalf of landlords.

Bibi was inspired to provide tenant defense to low-income individuals because everybody deserves a right to counsel, especially when these matters jeopardize an individual’s housing.

Fellowship Plans

Bibi plans to address the lack of counsel issue in eviction proceedings by providing day-of-court and advanced representation to tenants. Additionally, she plans to address the lack of counsel issue by raising awareness about Mid-Shore Pro Bono, Inc., and the legal services that the organization provides.

The Equal Justice Works Fellowship has afforded me the opportunity to provide tenant defense to low-income individuals in the lower eastern shore counties of Maryland”
