The Project

Brendan Hogan’s (he/him/his) project will work with the Anti-Defamation League across litigation disciplines to identify and initiate new cases, as well as provide support with ongoing litigation, to counter extremism in the United States.

ADL strives to combat the unprecedented atmosphere of antisemitism, hatred, extremism, and injustice that has eroded both the safety and civility of society. ADL is co-counsel in a federal lawsuit on behalf of the District of Columbia to hold two violent extremist groups accountable for the role they played in planning and carrying out the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, and has brought multiple other filings against other hate groups for committing violent acts. As individuals and organizations attempt to use doxing and swatting techniques to intimidate and threaten, ADL will pursue civil remedies to right these egregious wrongs, and put a stop to this dangerous trend.

Fellowship Plans

The Fellow will join the fight against antisemitism and extremism by developing new litigation stemming from recent actions taken by extremists organizations. They will also join current cases against extremist groups and provide strategic assistance in this litigation. In addition, the fellow will also assist with the rollout and managing of incidents reported to the CALL K-12 helpline.

My Equal Justice Works Fellowship has allowed me the chance to support the Jewish community. I’m proud the project can further my efforts, beyond my research into extremism and hate speech, to counter these movements and support social justice for this community.
