The Project

Carla provides direct legal representation to immigrant youth and children in removal proceedings designated as Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) and who meet the specific Equal Justice Works Justice AmeriCorps program.

There is currently a dire need to provide quality legal services to the rising number of immigrant children fleeing their home countries, largely from Central America, and entering the United States. Many of the children come fleeing from abuse, violence, and crime and seek refuge in the United States. Once in removal proceedings, these children are left alone to navigate a vastly complex legal system and expedited proceedings without being afforded the right to appointed counsel. Statistics have shown that there are many benefits associated with having an attorney in removal proceedings. In particular, an attorney can help identify viable forms of relief and increases the likelihood of success in securing immigration relief and avoid deportation.
