The Project

David’s project has two primary goals: 1) to provide statewide legal services to older adults who have experienced abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation, and 2) to educate senior services providers, tribal organizations, legal sub-communities, legal aid staff, and older adult individuals on topics related to elder abuse and the services available through this program.

Alaska is home to a rapidly growing older adult population and those living in rural and Native Alaskan communities have very limited access to legal and social services. Older adults experiencing elder abuse in Alaska face extreme access issues in locations that are off the road system and often live in such interdependent communities where reporting abuse and seeking justice will prove difficult.

One of David’s chief aims in life is to empower and inform people, and he wants to use his legal career to do that. That vocational focus paired with his previous work on a similar grant addressing elder abuse in Michigan and his work for a medical-legal partnership has prepared David to do the work toward the goals of this fellowship program.

Fellowship Plans

While Alaska is geographically unique, we anticipate that this program will serve clients facing very common poverty law issues related to housing, consumer protection, income maintenance, domestic relations, and public benefits, but will also address elder law-specific legal issues such as advance planning, guardianship/conservatorship, and long-term care issues.
