The Project

This Fellowship establishes an attorney who is dedicated to human trafficking cases, where there was not one before in the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center. In addition to providing direct representation to at least 15 survivors of human trafficking, this Fellowship will establish procedures for screening for victims of human trafficking. Deshawnda will also provide training to other service providers in order to expand access to resources for victims of human trafficking.

Deshawnda is an empathetic and compassionate person, but she is also looking forward to this challenge. She wants to provide trauma-centered services to clients and to learn how best to assist them in pursuing a criminal/civil/immigration case. She believes that she is a strong advocate and will be able to assert the victim’s rights during an investigation and legal proceeding.
