The Project

Frances’ (she/her/hers) project with Lawyers Alliance for New York will ensure provision of critically needed services to survivors of domestic violence by furnishing nonprofits who serve these clients with transactional legal services to enable the continued success of these institutions throughout New York City.

During and after the COVID-19 pandemic, domestic violence nonprofits faced increasing demand for services when domestic violence skyrocketed due to heightened risk factors in New York and across the country. Many of these nonprofits do not have general counsel, and if they do, their executive team is overburdened. This Fellowship will serve dozens of domestic violence organizations around New York City and allow these institutions to reach even more survivors by streamlining legal needs and diverting funding directly to services rather than transactional costs.

Fellowship Plans

Informed by active outreach and interviewing, Frances will build a set of model documents targeted specifically to the needs of nonprofit organizations serving domestic violence survivors. She will collaborate with sponsors to develop presentations for volunteers seeking to support these organizations and participate in clinics focused on the needs of domestic violence organizations. She will confer with leadership at these domestic violence nonprofits to retain Lawyers Alliance and establish an ongoing client-lawyer relationship that survives the duration of the Fellowship.
