The Project

A disproportionate number of LGBTQ students and students with disabilities are the targets of bullying. Students with disabilities are two to three times more likely to be bullied than their peers. Students who are bullied are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, lower academic achievement, and truancy, and to drop out of school. Students who are LGBTQ or have disabilities have disproportionately high rates of school suspension.

Fellowship Highlights

In the past two years, Gena has:

  • Directly worked with the families of over 100 students in New York City Public Schools
  • Represented clients in Manifestation Determination Reviews, suspension hearings, Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings, impartial hearings, and settlement negotiations, as well as helped families find and place their children in appropriate school placements
  • Connected families with over $300,000 worth of educational benefits, including tuition at specialized schools, expert evaluations, therapeutic services, and assistive technology
  • Quadrupled the number of trainings Advocates for Children of New York (AFC) provides on students’ rights in bullying incidents
  • Developed AFC’s first guide for parents and professionals on preventing and addressing bullying
  • Testified on four occasions before New York City Council Committees that were exploring bullying issues, as well as supports and protections for LGBTQ and other vulnerable students

What’s Next

Now that the Fellowship is complete, Gena plans to:

  • Continue the work of her project in a permanent position at Advocates for Children of New York
  • Continue to represent families of students involved in bullying incidents
