The Project

Jean-Luc Adrien is a 2018 Equal Justice Works Fellow serving in the Disaster Recovery Legal Corps (DRLC). As an immigrant raised in South Florida, Jean-Luc is invested in the area’s long-term well-being. Prior to joining the DRLC, Jean-Luc represented clients at The Bronx Defenders through the Family Defense Practice, interned with the Center for Constitutional Rights Ella Baker Program-Community Justice Project, and served with Teach for America in the Mississippi Delta. He obtained his B.A. in political science and anthropology from the University of Florida and graduated from New York University School of Law. Jean-Luc is also fluent in French, Spanish, and Haitian Kreyòl.

Long before Hurricane Irma, Florida’s Black, Latino & immigrant communities have been in crisis, buckling under the effects of historic disinvestment, over-criminalization and disenfranchisement. Unsafe housing conditions, extreme food insecurity and limited economic opportunities exacerbated the vulnerabilities of these communities to withstand a natural disaster of the proportions of Hurricane Irma. Missed work, Irma’s winds and the extended power outages that followed were enough to topple the fragile balance many households were barely maintaining, between poverty wages on one hand and rising housing and health costs on the other. Jean-Luc will use a community lawyering approach to provide legal services to community groups and their members impacted by Hurricane Irma. He will be a dedicated resource for community groups to be able to advance equity, racial justice, and human rights in the post-disaster context. Specifically, his work will focus on engaging in disaster accountability, research, and community education.
