The Project

Jenna is creating a nationwide Medical-Legal Partnership to obtain medical/psychological assessments and records review to support veterans’ applications for benefits before military correction boards and the Departments of Veterans Affairs.

Veterans’ applications for disability benefits and discharge upgrades frequently hinge on a corroborating psychiatric or medical opinion. Unfortunately, many veterans do not have access to high quality, low-cost medical care to obtain an expert opinion in support of their application for benefits or records correction. A nationwide Medical-Legal Partnership enables practitioners and advocates to identify professionals willing to work with these veterans and provide these necessary opinions for a reasonable, reduced price fee.

Fellowship Highlights

In the past year, Jenna has:

  • Have begun to develop relationships and contacts for the Partnership by identifying and contacting around 375 individuals, clinics, and organizations.
  • Have expanded the Medical-Legal Partnership to include twenty experts who have agreed to provide expert opinions in veterans’ cases.
  • Connected twenty-five experts with staff attorneys working on cases needing expert opinions to bolster applications for military medical retirements, upgrades in veterans’ characterization of service, and disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs for survivors of Military Sexual Trauma.

Next Steps

In the next year, Jenna plans to:

  • Continue to identify potential partners who may agree to join the Partnership and provide expert opinions.
  • Continue outreach to partner clinics, organizations, and individuals.
  • Continue to expand individuals, clinics, and organizations who agree to be part of the Partnership.
  • Continue working with staff attorneys to identify experts who can provide opinions on veterans’ cases.
