The Project

Jordan provided and expanded access to legal representation for detained immigrants in Orange County, CA, with a focus on immigrants who were victims of crimes (U visa), trafficking (T visa), and spousal abuse (VAWA).

Jordan’s interest in immigration began as an undergraduate at Duke, where she ran an adult ESL program and conducted independent research projects in Cuba, Chile, and Argentina. Doing research in sending countries, Jordan began to see the ways that economic necessity, political strife, and the quest for safety can impel people to migrate. But it wasn’t until after graduation, as immigration paralegal at the New York Legal Assistance Group, that she saw the way that legal aid can radically alter the immigration experience. This realization motivated Jordan’s work in law school and solidified her desire to continue to serve the immigrant community.

Fellowship Highlights

During her Fellowship, Jordan has:

  • Completed legal consultations with and trained more than 500 detainees on how deportation works, forms of relief, and their rights in detention
  • Represented 11 clients in immigration proceedings, the majority of whom were victims of violent crimes
  • Helped countless pro se detainees prepare their immigration cases for court
  • Placed 24 cases with pro bono attorneys and provided technical assistance throughout the representation
  • Collaborated with many nonprofit and state entities that work with detained immigrants in Southern California
