The Project

Maria Vasquez is a 2018 Equal Justice Works Fellow serving in the Disaster Recovery Legal Corps (DRLC). Maria previously clerked for Monty & Ramirez LLP where she assisted with various immigration matters. As a law student, Maria represented immigrant families in both the Immigration Clinic and the Asylum and Human Trafficking Clinic. Coming from an immigrant family, she understands the fears and struggles of the immigrant community, and she is passionate about serving her community.

Houston has one of the largest refugee and immigrant populations, many of whom were affected by Hurricane Harvey. Maria’s will provide low-income individuals in the Greater Houston area directly affected by Hurricane Harvey with legal assistance in immigration matters. Her project has four components: (1) community outreach and legal education, (2) legal screening and intake, (3) individual representation, and (4) training and referral with legal and social services providers.

Maria received her B.A. in political science and French from the University of Houston and her J.D. from the South Texas College of Law. She is also fluent in Spanish.
