The Project

Through ready access to an attorney when faced with eviction or termination of a subsidy, fewer veterans will end up homeless.Representing veterans in their claims for benefits such as SNAP, Social Security, and VA compensation and pension also increases the financial security of this vulnerable population. Megan’s project is aimed at increasing access to civil legal services for low-income veterans as a way to prevent homelessness and increase income stability.

During her Fellowship, Megan will:

  • Represent low-income veterans in housing court to defend against eviction actions
  • Represent low-income veterans in Social Security benefit appeals
  • Provide brief services for veterans facing debt collection actions
  • Network with veteran service providers to increase awareness of the legal services available to this population

The Inspiration

A disproportionate number of veterans experiencing homeless are people of color, specifically African American. The exclusion based on race of these veterans from the opportunities and resources that others enjoy is a national shame. The opportunity to serve this population while also learning several different areas of poverty law made this a great Fellowship for Megan.
