The Project

Melissa assisted veterans with civil legal issues such as housing and V.A. benefits claims. LawNY has forged a medical-legal partnership with the Canandaigua V.A. Medical Center to augment its holistic approach to assisting veterans. While staffing an on site office at the V.A., Melissa performed intakes with veterans as prospective clients and referring them to the resources they need. Additionally, Melissa provided direct representation to veterans and act as a pro bono coordinator, assigning V.A. benefits claims and appeals to volunteer attorneys from Nixon Peabody, LLP and Xerox Corp.

They scars that our disabled veterans bear are more than skin deep. Veterans experience a wide range of challenges in adjusting to civilian life – from maintaining suitable housing to accessing the care and benefits that they have earned. Life in rural western New York poses unique barriers to accessing resources, such as legal assistance.

My hope is to assist veterans from many different eras in achieving and maintaining the quality of life that they deserve.
