The Project

Michelle empowered immigrant victims of gender violence with knowledge of their rights and represented them in removal proceedings to help prevent their deportation and keep them together with their families.

The Inspiration

Need Addressed By Project

Through her previous volunteer work, Michelle realized how many people lack access to legal representation and the knowledge that they can seek protection within the legal system. Through her project, Michelle helped increase legal representation of immigrant victims of gender violence in removal proceedings by equipping pro bono attorneys with the tools necessary to handle these complex cases.

Fellowship Highlights

During her Fellowship, Michelle:

  • Provided brief advice and referrals to 54 women without immigration status or facing deportation
  • Provided full representation to 40 immigrant victims of gender violence
  • Obtained legal immigration status for two women in detention
  • Helped an additional 20 women avoid being placed in removal proceedings by petitioning for various types of relief for victims of violence
  • Filed U visa and T visa petitions, Asylum and Withholding of Removal applications, battered spouse waivers, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) petitions, adjustment of status applications, and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) applications and renewals
  • Developed training materials on representing victims of gender violence in removal proceedings
  • Trained and mentored pro bono attorneys
