The Project

Milan will expand the work of LAFLA’s Veterans Justice Center by providing direct legal services to Veterans to promote economic security. Milan will advocate for Veterans in such areas as government benefits, consumer and student loan issues, and child support modification; performing community outreach and staffing clinics; and identifying and managing cases for pro bono placement.

Los Angeles County is home to more homeless and very-low-income Veterans than any other state in the country. According to a recent study, Los Angeles County Veterans face multiple and complex challenges to self-sufficiency. Further, over one-third of veterans reported having financial difficulties during the past year because they were unaware about the costs of living “in the civilian world” such as housing, utilities and transportation.

Milan Moore is the right name for this project because:

  • She has previously volunteered with Legal Aid services in Hartford, CT and has gained the necessary skills of being able to effectively advocate on a veteran’s behalf.
  • She is from a low-income community and can bring her insight to the team on issues that are plaguing similarly situated communities.
  • She is passionate about helping marginalized individuals and is eager to help individuals become more economically self-sufficient.

What’s Next

During Milan’s Fellowship, Milan:

  • Advocated in front of ALJs in hopes of securing government benefits for clients
  • Participated in various LAFLA clinics for low income veterans, during which she will conduct intake interviews, provide counsel and advice, and ascertain whether LAFLA should retain the veteran for further representation.
  • Provided holistic representation to veterans by identifying additional areas for advocacy and referring the veterans to the appropriate advocate within LAFLA Veterans Justice Center or to an outside organization.
