The Project

MK will help LGBTQ communities in Georgia overcome legal barriers to Medicaid, Medicare, and SNAP through legal representation, education and community outreach.

Health care and food are essential for any community to thrive. Yet, LGBTQ communities are more likely to be food insecure and in need of healthcare. This issue affects Atlanta, Georgia acutely, as the city is home to a large LGBTQ population with many families relying on public assistance. Despite the growing LGBTQ population in its city center, Georgia’s political landscape is volatile, and a number of statewide practices undermine LGBTQ individuals’ access to SNAP, Medicaid, and Medicare.

Fellowship Plans

MK will address these legal barriers in three ways. First, they will provide culturally-competent direct legal representation for LGBTQ individuals facing legal barriers to Medicaid, Medicare, and SNAP. Next, they will educate LGBTQ communities about their legal rights in relation to public benefits. Finally, MK will work with local organizations to conduct outreach and develop best practices for attorneys working with the LGBTQ community.

As a queer Georgian, I am eager to return to Atlanta to serve those in my community. Atlanta is full of creative, resilient queer and trans individuals, and I am excited to empower them to live their best lives.
