The Project

Human trafficking survivors often have a variety of legal needs that have to be addressed in order for them to rebuild their lives from the victimization of human trafficking. Yet few organizations and programs offer comprehensive legal services for human trafficking survivors—either onsite or through a network of attorneys. The need in the Washington, D.C. and Maryland areas is particularly acute because of the prevalence of human trafficking in the area and the large immigrant population in Maryland that is vulnerable to it.

As a Crime Victims Justice Corps Fellow, Rebeca will directly represent survivors of sex and labor trafficking in all immigration matters and in crime victims’ rights advocacy and enforcement. For other legal matters arising from victimization, she will connect the survivor with pro bono organizations with whom the SAFE Center has worked, and low bono attorneys in a network the SAFE Center is beginning to build.

Rebeca has focused heavily on immigration law throughout her law school career and she has the competence to handle immigration cases and the interest to learn everything she can about working with trafficking survivors. She believes that client interaction is the most important aspect of lawyering and she strives to ensure that clients feel comfortable and empowered as they work together through the case. Additionally, she is fluent in English and Spanish, which is an asset as the majority of the immigrant clients at the host organization are Hispanic/Latinx.
