Sam (she/her/hers) will advocate for migrant youth involved with the juvenile court system in Arizona through legal services, community education, and capacity building.
These vulnerable youth face increased risks of immigration detention and deportation because of barriers to accessing crucial immigration legal services. The circumstances that push children into foster care or juvenile delinquency may complicate their immigration case, thus making it harder to navigate the already complex legal system or connect to limited services. A lack of information and resources in migrant communities and frontline service providers broadens gaps in identifying and connecting youth to legal services and life-altering immigration relief.
During her Fellowship, Sam aims to address immediate immigration needs while laying the groundwork for long-term stability through pathways to citizenship. She will provide direct representation and legal screenings, especially for youth whose cases may not fit within the scope of other available services. Sam also seeks to promote access and agency for migrant youth through Know Your Rights trainings and community education efforts. Additionally, she will provide immigration trainings and guides to help community partners and government stakeholders develop effective strategies for recognizing and addressing the immigration needs of the children they serve.
For kids grappling with complicated legal issues and overlapping personal challenges, obtaining immigration relief opens life-changing possibilities. I’m grateful to be part of that process and engage in meaningful work as an Equal Justice Works Fellow.
