Survivors of human trafficking often face a complex array of legal obstacles, ranging from access to basic needs such as food, shelter, and childcare, to benefits and rights like immigration status adjustment and victims’ compensation.
Madeleine provided holistic representation to survivors that ensured that all their legal needs were met with no-cost, culturally competent, and comprehensive legal services. Additionally, through this Fellowship, Madeleine strengthened the network of service providers in Connecticut to engage all clients and increased the appreciation among clients and providers for the importance of civil legal services.
As a law student and a Connecticut lawyer, Madeleine gained experience in a broad range of practice areas, including family, immigration, disability, and housing. She worked extensively with low-income clients who had been disenfranchised in various ways by the legal system, and worked to ensure that everyone had the opportunity to be heard, regardless of their ability to access or afford legal representation.
Through the Crime Victims Justice Corps Fellowship, Madeleine helped to increase access and improve outcomes in civil legal services in Connecticut by providing direct legal services and by working with existing service providers to create a service continuum that meaningfully addresses all of the clients’ various needs.
