Equal Justice Works Announces Fellowship Application Opening

/ Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C., JUNE 28, 2017 – Equal Justice Works, the leading nonprofit organization committed to mobilizing the next generation of public interest lawyers, today announced the opening of its 2018 Fellowship application period, which will run from June 28 through September 27, 2017.

Each year, Equal Justice Works selects a class of passionate public interest lawyers who have designed innovative, two-year projects in conjunction with legal nonprofit organizations to serve the most critical needs of their communities. These projects address a range of legal issues including voting rights, health care, immigration, veterans’ benefits, LGBTQ rights, justice reform, community economic development, legal tech, and more.

Well-qualified candidates are matched with generous sponsors at law firms, corporations, foundations, and individuals that sponsor and support their projects. Fellows receive a competitive salary, generous loan repayment assistance, connections to prominent private-sector sponsors, leadership training, and personalized staff support during their two-year tenure.

“We have a 25-year track record of recruiting diverse and talented legal change agents ready and willing to tackle injustices in this country,” said Equal Justice Works Executive Director David Stern. “I look forward to seeing the creative projects they propose and getting many of the applicants on the front lines to work on behalf of communities and causes.”

Over the past three decades, Equal Justice Works has awarded over 1,700 Fellowships to public interest lawyers committed to building a more just society. Roughly 85 percent of Fellows continue to serve the public interest beyond their Fellowships and throughout their careers.
