/ Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C., NOVEMBER 5, 2019—Equal Justice Works, the nation’s largest facilitator of opportunities in public interest law, today announced that Vanita Gupta and Kim Koopersmith have been named to the organization’s board of directors.
“We are honored to welcome Vanita, and welcome back Kim, to the Equal Justice Works Board of Directors,” said David Stern, executive director at Equal Justice Works. “These highly respected leaders embody the organization’s spirit of service, and we are extremely fortunate to have them join our continuing work to create opportunities for lawyers to bring lasting change to underserved communities across our country.”
Vanita Gupta is the president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. She previously served as the Acting Assistant Attorney General and head of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. “It is a privilege to join the Equal Justice Works Board of Directors,” said Ms. Gupta. “I am honored to support an organization that mobilizes public service leaders to use the law for its best purpose—to help those in need.”
Kim Koopersmith is the chairperson of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, a position she has held since 2013. She previously served on the Equal Justice Works Board of Counselors and its Board of Directors for ten years—three of them as board chair. “I look forward to returning to serve as a member of the Equal Justice Works Board of Directors,” said Ms. Koopersmith. “This organization is a powerful force for good and it is exciting to continue supporting the work of the Equal Justice Works Fellows across the nation who are providing critical legal services to communities in need.”
In addition to these new members, Equal Justice Works announced that Ivan K. Fong, senior vice president, legal affairs, and general counsel of the 3M Company, has been elected board chair. Mr. Fong will succeed Randal S. Milch, co-chair of NYU Center for Cybersecurity, who will step down at the conclusion of his term. Kathryn J. Fritz, partner in the Litigation and Intellectual Property Groups of Fenwick & West LLP, has been named board vice chair.
